The IPACCMS like to congratulate the Emirates Intensive Care Society, Saudi Critical Care Society and Egypt Intensive Care Society for becoming full members in WFSICCM in the 10th World Congress CCM last Sept 2009 in Florence, Italy.
The year 2009 showed two important issues in Critical Care around the globe. The first was H1N1 pandemic crisis around the globe The mortality for H1N1-infected patients admitted to intensive care ranges from 10-40% over the first month and survivors spend a median of 2 weeks in the intensive care unit. international leaders of investigator-led clinical research consortia, world renowned clinicians dedicated to the care of critically ill patients and more than 40 critical care societies has joined together as the International Forum for Acute Care Trialists (In FACT) led by professor John Marshall from Canada to promote a scientifically rigorous, geopolitically inclusive, and academically collegial research response to this challenge (www.infactglobal.org).
The second was The recent ''discovery'' of the epidemic of ''medical error'' as an important cause of morbidity and mortality and be recognized it as an existence should not be a surprise .this has led the focus on patient safety in ICU , a superb promoting initiative by European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) to all stakeholders including WHO and those who relate to our specialty in a process aimed at not only raising the profile of patient safety, but to actually improve the outcome and this was evidence in the Vienna Declaration on 10 OCT 2009 with more then 50 Critical Care Societies among the signatories.( http://patientsafety.esicm.org ).
This year event will focused on patient safety in ICU and the ICU experience of severe H1N1 in Africa, Asia and Middle east IN addition to update topics in critical care (Sepsis ,ARDS , surgical critical care , Neurocritical care , Nephrology.etc) in different formats of presentation as :plenary lectures, round tables , pros and cons debate and ask the experts.
Two other important issues to be discussed is 1 ) Strategies to improve the ICU with limited resources and how to provide easy access to education and training to ICU in poor countries around the globe. 2) Role , responsibilities and preparedness strategies by critical care professionals in dealing with Natural disasters that occurred in the region and other parts of the world and what’s the future expectations in view of the global warming!
We like to announce that this conference we added three research awards (Nursing critical care, Quality and Patient Safety Critical Care and Healthcare Management Research Studies).
In addition to the other 4 CCM awards for (2 for students and 2 for health professionals).
Finally we like to thank Dr.Edgar Jimenez and the rest of WFSICCM Executive council members for the support to the to IPACCMS and Emirates Intensive Care Society and thanks for Dr. Hussain Al-Rahma President IPACCMS and EICS for his inspired leadership in promoting critical care in emirates and countries in Asia and Africa.
